LIC + Government Team Up to Empower Women in Villages

On July 21, 2025, LIC and the Department of Rural Development (DoRD) signed an agreement to promote something powerful in rural India:

A scheme called Bima Sakhi Yojana — where women become insurance champions in their villages.

What happened?

  • LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with DoRD (Ministry of Rural Development).
  • The signing took place during the “Anubhuti” National Conclave on Financial Inclusion in Goa (July 8–10, 2025).

What is Bima Sakhi Yojana?

  • It’s a LIC-led scheme to train women from rural areas to:
  • Educate villagers about insurance
  • Help them get insured
  • Earn a commission by doing so
This mission is aligned with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM).

Who can join?

  • Women aged 18 to 70 years
  • Must have passed at least Class 10
  • They will get 3 years of training + monthly stipend

What is the benefit for women?

  • Each selected Bima Sakhi woman will receive: Monthly Stipend of ₹7,000 for 1st year,₹6,000 in 2nd year and ₹5,000 in 3rd year.
  • And on top of that, they’ll earn commissions for getting people insured.
  • "Target: Insure 2 people per month or 24 per year"

Why is this important?

  • Helps rural women earn and become financially independent
  • Spreads insurance awareness in villages
  • Promotes financial inclusion
  • Connects rural families with LIC policies and security

In short:

India’s rural women are being trained to become insurance warriors, one policy at a time.
LIC gives them skills + salary + commission, while villagers get financial protection.
A win-win mission — the heart of true rural empowerment.
